The X-T5 Setup Course — Lesson 1: Gear & Menu Setup
Get your Fujifilm X-T5 ready for serious work
📍 Estimated duration: 60-80 min
→ Includes hands-on configuration time — go at your own pace and test settings.
🔹 Introduction
Welcome to The X-T5 Setup Course, a four-lesson series designed to help you configure your Fujifilm X-T5 for maximum efficiency, reliability, and creative control.
Whether you’re a seasoned professional or a serious enthusiast, this course will walk you through the essential setup stages to make sure your camera is tailored to your shooting style and workflow needs.
The course is divided into four focused lessons:
Gear & Menu Setup — Get your X-T5 ready for serious work (this lesson).
Custom Buttons & Q Menu — Personalize your controls for faster shooting.
Autofocus Mastery — Fine-tune your AF system for precision and performance.
Workflow & Backups — Build a solid system for file safety and efficiency.
This lesson is divided into six practical modules:
Display & Handling Preferences — Optimize how your X-T5 looks, feels, and responds in hand.
Image Quality & Output Settings — Set the foundation for your visual style and file formats.
Exposure & ISO Configuration — Define how your camera handles light and sensitivity.
Autofocus Base Setup — Prepare essential AF modes and assist tools (deep dive in Lesson 3).
Card Slot & File Management — Organize your image storage like a pro.
Power, Behavior & Quick Access — Boost performance and streamline essential functions.
Module 1: Display & Handling Preferences
📍 Estimated duration: 8-11 min
→ A quick setup to make your X-T5 more intuitive and comfortable to use.
Before adjusting image quality or exposure, it’s essential to configure how your X-T5 looks, feels, and responds in use. This module focuses on optimizing your viewfinder, LCD, and behavior settings — key elements that directly affect your efficiency and comfort when shooting.
Section 1.1 – EVF and LCD Setup
▸ EVF Brightness & Color
Menu path: SETUP > SCREEN SETTING > EVF BRIGHTNESS / EVF COLOR
EVF Brightness: Set to Auto for most situations. For controlled environments (like studio work), consider a manual setting to ensure consistent preview.
EVF Color: Leave at default unless correcting for color bias under specific lighting.
▸ EVF/LCD Auto Switch
Menu path: SETUP > SCREEN SETTING > VIEW MODE SETTING > SHOOTING
Eye Sensor:
Automatically switches between the LCD and EVF when your eye approaches the viewfinder. Handy for handheld use, but can be disruptive on a tripod or at low angles.
You can switch display modes using the VIEW MODE SETTING menu or the VIEW MODE button, located just to the right of the viewfinder.
▸ Performance Boost (Frame Rate)
Menu path: SETUP > POWER MANAGEMENT > PERFORMANCE
Set to BOOST for faster display refresh and better responsiveness — useful for tracking subjects or working in low light.
⚠️ Note: This setting increases power consumption slightly.
Section 1.2 – Preview Exposure and White Balance
Menu path: SETUP > SCREEN SETTING > PREVIEW EXP./WB IN MANUAL MODE
This setting controls whether the EVF or LCD shows a live preview of your exposure and white balance when using Manual Exposure Mode.
Set this setting to PREVIEW EXP./WB to see the real effect of your aperture, shutter speed, ISO, and white balance in real time. This is especially useful in natural light or studio setups where accurate previewing matters.
⚠️ Note: This setting has no effect on focus mode — it applies only when you shoot in Manual Exposure Mode, not when using Manual Focus.
Section 1.3 – Touchscreen Behavior
Menu path: SETUP > BUTTON/DIAL SETTING > TOUCH SCREEN SETTING
Fujifilm’s touchscreen controls are highly customizable. You can fine-tune how (or whether) the screen responds to your touch. Here are the five main settings, with recommended values and notes based on professional use:
▸ Touch Screen Setting
Recommended: ON (with caution)
Enables general touchscreen interaction. Keep it ON if you want to use the LCD for focus point selection or quick adjustments.
⚠️ Note: If you often shoot handheld or in fast-paced environments, you may want to disable it to avoid accidental taps.
▸ Double Tap Setting
Recommended: OFF
Disables the double-tap gesture to center the focus point. It’s rarely needed and often triggered by mistake, especially when handling the screen quickly or adjusting the tilt screen.
▸ Touch Function
Recommended: OFF
Disables the swipe gestures (up/down/left/right) linked to Fn functions.
⚠️ Note: Highly sensitive — can easily trigger unintended actions when adjusting the screen or handling the camera. Best left OFF unless you have a very specific use for it.
▸ Touch Zoom
Recommended: OFF
This setting mimics smartphone-style pinch zoom on touch. Most photographers find it unintuitive or unnecessary on the X-T5. Use the command dials or magnification assist instead.
▸ EVF Touch Screen Area Settings
Recommended: RIGHT HALF or OFF
This limits touch functionality while using the EVF, to prevent your nose or cheek from moving the focus point. Set to RIGHT HALF if you shoot with your right eye, set to OFF if you don’t use touch AF at all.

Section 1.4 – Display Information (Optional Customization)
Menu path: SETUP > SCREEN SETTING > DISP. CUSTOM SETTING
Choose what information is displayed in the EVF and LCD during shooting:
Histogram
Electronic Level
Gridlines
Exposure Indicators
A clean, minimal display can help you stay focused on composition. Customize it based on your style — for example, landscape shooters often enable gridlines and histograms, while portrait shooters may prefer a distraction-free view.
✅ Summary
By completing this module, you’ve optimized how your X-T5 behaves and displays essential information. These foundational settings help reduce friction, eliminate distractions, and make the camera feel more natural in your hands — all critical for working quickly and confidently in the field.
Module 2: Image Quality & Output Settings
📍 Estimated duration: 12-15 min
→ Establish a strong image base to match your creative and workflow needs.
This module focuses on the image quality settings that define how your files look straight out of camera. Whether you shoot RAW, JPEG, or both, this configuration ensures optimal results, consistency, and flexibility for post-processing or direct delivery.
Section 2.1 – File Format: RAW, JPEG, or HEIF
